Early Friday Morning while much of Middlebury was sleeping, a fire dispatch was toned out for the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department. The original tone was dispatched at 12:34 AM, and a report of a Structure Fire in Ridgewood Estates on Ridgewood drive was given. The MVFD mobilized and arrived quickly and found a good portion of the structure fully involved. Due to the fact that this structure was not occupied, Chief Perrotti began exterior operations due to the extent of the fire. Later on crews would be sent inside twice to determine if there was any fire to the unit next door, there was none found both times.
Exterior crews operated Engine 3's deck gun, Engine 1's deck gun, a 2 1/2" hand line, and a 1 3/4" hand line. Interior crews used an 1 3/4" line, along with hand lights, a halligan bar, an attic ladder, and a closet hook. The well trained MVFD quickly had the fire under control. Watertown was called for mutual aid and assisted in extinguishing hot spots, and equipment cleanup. Our thanks to Waterown FD for their efforts.
Crews returned to the Fire House at approximately 3:30 AM, but there was still more work to be done. All apparatus was washed, Airpacks had to be refilled, hose had to be washed and put back on the apparatus, and water tanks had to be filled. Many members left a little after 5:00 AM. Some members returned to the scene and were still working the scene at the time of publishing this page (9:30 AM). Twenty five Middlebury Fire Fighters responded to this call.
