"Chief Perrotti keeps insisting it's about financial oversight only and about the Fire Department only," Heidkamp said. "There is more than the Fire Department that reports to the Fire Commission. Maybe it should have been called the Public Safety Commission."

Having untrained and uninformed members of the community making decisions of any kind regarding the “Operational Side” of the Fire Department, Emergency Operations or Health Department is reckless and outright dangerous. It is like assembling a committee of civilians to plan a war. It is NOT done in the military and it certainly should not be done in the Town of Middlebury.

The suggestion of a Public Safety Commission without even the mention of the Police Department appears to be a bureaucratic oxymoron. Maybe the members of the Police Commission who are elected by the residents should then also be under the control of the politically appointed Public Safety Commission? ... We don't think so.

If you want to help the Fire Department and have a say in its operations, there is one fool-proof way to do so....
